in the beginning...

We told stories – and we never really stopped. We scratched them on rock. We etched them into stone. We told and retold them to whoever would listen. In reality, nothing is more human than storytelling.

As complex as it is throughout human history, all stories share common DNA. It’s called monomyth. The hero’s journey – the lone figure on a quest to overcome. The hero might get some help. The hero might even have a group friends tag along. Sound familiar? It should. It’s the boy who lived. It’s the one will bring balance to the fore. It’s monomyth and it’s the ability that storytelling has to make sense of our world.

But telling a story is only half of the equation. Showing is just as important – through signs, symbols and techniques. What we call visual storytelling. They’re what make stories accessible, relatable and sticky. As we sit here, our thirst for storytelling hasn’t let up. Digital devices may have forever changed how we interact with a story – but it’s still stories that we’re after. Day in and day out.

Because we crave stories.
We want them.
We need them.
And we value those who can tell them.
Because they help us make sense of it all – and show us how.
